Information

Situated in the south central part of Guangdong Province and to the east of the Pearl River estuary, Dongguan lies in the heartland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.  Initially a county in the Eastern Jin dynasty, called Bao'an from AD 331 until AD 757 in the Tang Dynasty when it changed name to the current Dongguan. "Dong" means east in Chinese referring to its location east of Guangzhou, and "guan" being a kind of native grass growing in profusion on this land. Becoming a county-level city in September 1985 and upgraded to a prefecture-level city in January 1988, it now encompasses four urban sub-districts and 28 towns, with an area of 2,460 square kilometres and a population of 8.46 million (as at the end of 2019), which includes 2.51 million registered permanent residents. Some 200,000 overseas Chinese and 900,000 compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have their ethnic origin stemming in Dongguan, making it a renowned homeland for overseas Chinese.

Taiping Handbag Factory, China's very first enterprise involved in processing and assembly with given materials and parts or compensation trade, was founded in Dongguan in 1978 when China kicked off its reform and opening-up drive. Since then, Dongguan has quickly transformed itself from a traditional agricultural county to an internationally renowned manufacturing city. As a perfect showcase city, Dongguan is designated as one of China's 18 exemplary regions in reform and opening-up. In 2019, its GDP increased by 7.4% to 948.25 billion RMB, and its total import and export reached 1.38 trillion RMB, ranking third among China's Top 100 Foreign Trade Cities for three consecutive years. These statistics are supported by reports issued by authoritative organizations, such as the Renmin University of China and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Dongguan's government-business relations index, Internet Plus index, and comprehensive economic competitiveness ranked first, eighth and thirteenth respectively nationwide. The people’s livelihood development index ranks third among prefecture-level cities in the country. The vitality, quality and charm of Dongguan's development continues to improve.

"The world's factory" that keeps pace with the times. Renowned for its "Made in Dongguan", the city is a world manufacturing centre and an important export base for China. Over the years, Dongguan has enjoyed close economic and trade ties with more than 200 countries and regions. With over 13,000 foreign-funded enterprises in Dongguan from over 60 countries or regions, which include nearly 100 projects by Fortune Global 500 companies, the city has attracted a total of US$79.1 billion of foreign capital. Covering over 30 specific sectors and 60,000 kinds of products, 170,000+ industrial enterprises in Dongguan boast a 90% ability to be locally self-contained and thus constitute a complete manufacturing system, ranging from electronic information, clothing, furniture, hardware to moldings, and more. The local smartphone industry is particularly well developed, with Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo mobile phone shipments ranking top five globally. One in four smartphones in the world is made in Dongguan. In recent years, Dongguan has been actively implementing the "Belt and Road" Initiative, having hosted for years the Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo, China Processing Trade Products Fair and Guangdong International Robot & Intelligent Equipment Exposition. It has launched the China Railway (CR) Express freight services which travel between China and Europe, and between China and Asia. With its integrated land and sea linkages, it strives to be an important hub for the "Belt and Road" Initiative.

An innovation-oriented city dedicated to developing science and technology. The only prefecture-level city incorporated into the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, Dongguan has, in recent years, been carrying out an innovation-driven development strategy and promoting its "automation plan", "growth doubling program" and a quick transition from "Made in Dongguan" to "Intelligently manufactured in Dongguan". Part of the strategy is the Songshan Lake Hi-tech Zone, which is part of the China National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone, and home to major tech facilities like China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, multinational corporations like Huawei Terminal Headquarters and innovation incubators such as Songshan Lake XBot Park. It serves as a powerful "innovation engine" for Dongguan. Dongguan is also home to the Binhaiwan Bay Area, located in the geometric centre of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. With a total area of 84.1km2, it will be a bridgehead for the integration of Dongguan into the Greater Bay Area city cluster. There are over 6,000 Chinese high-tech firms, ranking first among prefecture-level cities in Guangdong Province. There are also 122 technology business incubators, 33 new-type research institutions and 10 universities, all constituting excellent resources for innovation. CSNS, in particular, is China's largest scientific facility to date and has successfully produced its first neutron beam. With a planned construction of Songshan Lake Science City, more and more international cooperation in emerging industries will be seen in Dongguan.

A city of great heritage and cultural diversity. Dongguan is an important birthplace of Lingnan civilization. Its Haogang Historical Site is known as the "first village in the Pearl River Delta," indicating that ancient humans in the Pearl River Delta already lived in Dongguan as early as 5,000 years ago. The famous opium incineration in 1839 by the imperial official Lin Zexu at Humen marked the beginning of modern Chinese history. With its profound Lingnan cultural heritage, the famous Lingnan School of Painting also originated in Dongguan at Keyuan Garden. Dongguan is also home to a large number of newly built public cultural facilities such as the Civil Art Centre, Yulan Theatre, museums, libraries and science and technology museums.

Known as the city of libraries and museums, Dongguan has become a city exuding a vibrant culture. Its musicals, migrant worker music and migrant worker literature among others exert a strong influence nationwide. Named as a demonstration area for China's national public cultural service system and copyright protection, Dongguan has earned the title of National Civilized City for 4 consecutive years. People from different countries and regions live here in harmony, experiencing an integrated multi-cultural environment in this city of happiness.

A city dedicated to sports. It is the birthplace of Chen Jingkai, China's first world record breaker in sports. The most talented snooker player Ding Junhui and basketball superstar Yi Jianlian, were trained here. It boasts Guangdong Hongyuan Basketball Team, China's first private basketball club which has won nine CBA championships, and the Dongguan Xintongsheng Women's Basketball Team which won the first WCBA championship trophy for Guangdong. Sport facilities like the Dongguan Basketball Centre which is known as the "No.1 Stadium in the CBA", Li Yongbo Badminton School, and the National Badminton Training Base are also located here. It enjoys various popular recognition for swimming, dragon boating, weightlifting, dragon and lion dancing, as well as being "the cradle of snooker champions" and a "national basketball city". International sport events such as Golf World Cup, Sudirman Cup Badminton Championship, Asian Marathon Championships and FIBA Basketball World Cup have all been held in Dongguan.
